  • Peace Memorial Park & Atomic Bomb Dome

    Peace Memorial Park & Atomic Bomb Dome

    Seeing over a million visitors a year, Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park is a space of remembrance for the city and sits where the atomic bomb was dropped on August 6th, 1945. Many start their visit at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Its exhibitions tell the history of the city before and after the bomb, features items and accounts from victims and their families, and explore the state of nuclear weaponry today. By extension, the park honors victims at memorials including the Pond of Peace and Flame of Peace.

    At the edge of the park stands the Atomic Bomb Dome, one of the few structures left standing near the blast site in 1945. Originally built as an industrial exhibition hall, the skeletal remains of the building now serve as one of the city’s most powerful reminders of the impact of nuclear war.

  • Miyajima Island

    Miyajima Island

    Hop on a ferry and be transported to the peaceful shrine island Miyajima. It may appear to be a small island off the coast of Hiroshima, but there’s surprisingly a lot to explore. First and foremost is Itsukushima Shrine whose ingenious construction makes its buildings appear to rest on the ocean waters. Traditionally pilgrims would sail their boats under the shrine’s “floating” torii gate to enter the shrine.

    Visitors can also ride ropeways and hike walking trails leading up Mount Misen, the island’s tallest point, for wide views across the Seto Inland Sea. Despite its popularity, Miyajima has a quieter feel, especially away from the main shrine area. You may even encounter wild deer that move freely around parts of the island.

  • Shukkeien Garden

    Shukkeien Garden

    Originally created in the early 17th century for the feudal lord Asano Nagaakira, Shukkeien Garden was designed around the idea of recreating larger natural landscapes in miniature form. Paths wind around a central pond crossed by Koko-kyo or “Rainbow” bridge, with carefully arranged viewpoints revealing different scenes as you move through the grounds.

    The garden changes noticeably with the seasons, from cherry blossoms in spring to autumn foliage later in the year. You can also stop to enjoy several teahouses in the gardens.

Hiroshima has mild, coastal weather, making it a rewarding destination to visit throughout the year. Here’s what to expect:

  • June to August heat and rain – Less intense than other areas of Japan, the rainy season still arrives during between June and July with warmer, humid weather.
