Europe's Top Hidden Gems
When it comes to planning a European getaway, the same iconic destinations tend to dominate the conversation. Paris, Rome and Santorini are all breathtaking, but what about the places that don't flood your social media feed every summer?

If you're looking for a trip that offers just as much beauty, history and culture—without the crush of tourists—these under-the-radar European destinations deserve a spot on your itinerary with their serene and tranquil settings. Travel Writer Jordi Lippe-McGraw tells us more.
Sardinia, Italy
If the Amalfi Coast is Italy's dazzling socialite, Sardinia is its effortlessly chic cousin—the one who knows all the best-kept secrets. This island, floating in the Mediterranean like a sun-drenched paradise, is home to some of the most stunning beaches in Europe. Imagine powder-white sand and water so clear it rivals the Maldives.
But Sardinia isn't just about its coastline. The island's rugged interior is dotted with prehistoric Nuragic ruins, dramatic mountain landscapes and sleepy villages where time seems to stand still. For a taste of authentic Sardinian life, head inland to Barbagia, where shepherds still make pecorino cheese the traditional way.
Porto, Portugal
Lisbon tends to steal the limelight, but Porto—Portugal's second city—is every bit as enchanting. Nestled along the Douro River, it's a place of azulejo-covered buildings, atmospheric wine cellars, and a creative energy that's impossible to resist.
Spend your days wandering through the Ribeira district, where laundry flutters from balconies and café tables spill into cobbled streets. Then, cross the Dom Luís I Bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia for a tasting tour of the city's famous port wine. If you want a break from the buzz, hop on a boat up to the Douro Valley, where rolling vineyards and terraced hillsides feel like something out of a dream.
Sifnos, Greece
Santorini and Mykonos might be the poster children for Greek island vacations, but Sifnos is the place you go when you want the magic—without the crowds. With its whitewashed villages, golden beaches and ridiculously good food, this Cycladic gem is all about slow living.
Sifnos is known as Greece's ‘foodie island’ and for good reason. The local cuisine, shaped by generations of home cooks and devoted fishermen, is a highlight. Some of our favorites are chickpea stew (revithada) baked in wood-fired ovens or the island's signature mastelo, slow-cooked lamb with red wine and herbs.
Umbria, Italy
Tuscany might get all the attention, but Umbria is where you'll find Italy's soul. Often called the ‘green heart of Italy’, this region is a dreamscape of rolling hills, medieval towns and vineyards that seem to stretch forever.
Perugia, the region's capital, has a lively atmosphere thanks to its university, while Assisi—home to St. Francis—is a spiritual and architectural marvel. Roam the tiny hilltop towns such as Spello, where cobblestone streets are lined with flower-filled balconies, and the smell of truffle pasta drifts from tiny trattorias. For a truly tranquil escape, head to Castello di Reschio right by the Tuscan border, where you can relax in the surrounds of this grand estate.
Milos, Greece
Milos is proof that Greece still has secrets worth keeping. With surreal rock formations and hidden coves, this volcanic island feels like nature's masterpiece. Sarakiniko Beach, with its lunar-like white cliffs, is one of the most photographed spots in Greece—but somehow, Milos still remains off the typical tourist trail.
Beyond its beaches, Milos offers plenty of charm, from the colourful fishing village of Klima to the ancient catacombs that predate Rome. Rent a boat to explore sea caves only accessible by water, and cap off the day with fresh seafood at a harborside taverna.
Comporta, Portugal
If Comporta were anywhere else in Europe, it would be packed with luxury hotels and overrun with tourists. Instead, this sleepy stretch of Portugal's coast has remained blissfully under the radar despite its postcard-perfect beaches and bohemian vibe.
Just an hour south of Lisbon, Comporta is a favorite hideaway for in-the-know travelers who want to trade city life for sand dunes, surf and fresh seafood. The best way to experience it? Book into the beautiful boutique Sublime Comporta, sip vinho verde at a beachfront restaurant and embrace the art of doing absolutely nothing.
The Dolomites, Italy
Most travellers associate the Dolomites with world-class skiing, but summer here is an entirely different kind of magic. Picture jagged limestone peaks towering over emerald valleys, wildflower-strewn meadows and alpine lakes that mirror the sky.
Hiking and cycling trails weave through the region, offering breathtaking views at every turn. Base yourself in a charming village like Ortisei or Cortina d'Ampezzo, and spend your days exploring mountain huts serving hearty Tyrolean dishes. And if you're up for a real adventure, take the cable car to Seceda for one of the most jaw-dropping panoramas in the Alps.
Paros, Greece
Paros has all the beauty of its more famous neighbours but without the sky-high prices and wall-to-wall crowds. Here, you'll find sugar-cube villages, golden beaches and a laid-back atmosphere that makes it easy to fall in love.
The island's main town, Parikia, has a bustling waterfront and a maze of narrow streets perfect for aimless wandering. But it's Naoussa—a former fishing village turned chic getaway—that truly steals the show. With its bougainvillea-draped alleys and stylish restaurants, it feels like Mykonos before Mykonos was Mykonos.
Ready to escape the crowds?
Europe's biggest cities and bucket-list destinations will always have their allure, but sometimes, the best adventures lie just off the beaten path. Sipping wine in Porto, hiking sun-drenched trails in the Dolomites, or kicking back on a secluded Sardinian beach—these under-the-radar spots deliver all the magic of Europe, minus the crowds. So, where will you go first?
