First opened by a young couple, Jean Marchal and Maria Coppey as a restaurant in 1755, d’Angleterre has built on the team’s reputation for gourmet cuisine and superb hospitality. Today, it is Denmark’s only 5-Star Superior Luxury Hotel, beloved by both dignitaries and celebrities. Occupying a prestigious location in the heart of the capital in Kongens Nytorv or the King’s New Square, all the city’s major landmarks including Nyhavn, the Little Mermaid, Amalienborg Castle, Tivoli Gardens and Europe’s longest shopping street, Strøget, are just steps away.
The décor and furnishings showcase the grandeur of this neoclassical palace with its grand proportions, wondrous chandeliers, stately marble columns, warming fireplaces, gilded panelling, and handsome balconies. Over the years, the d’Angleterre has been sympathetically updated and is now a stylish blend of heritage features, contemporary chic and modern conveniences. Each of the 92 rooms and suites has been individually designed to showcase its historic charms, with a soothing neutral palette, natural materials, upscale Scandinavian brands including DUX mattresses and Bang & Olufsen TVs, Wi-Fi, climate control, Nespresso machines and well-appointed marble bathrooms with thick robes and Diptyque amenities.
Entry level Superior Guest Rooms are on the cosy side, so trade up to a Deluxe Room if space is important to you. There are 60 suites and both the Superior and Deluxe Suites include a comfortable and inviting seating area. For separate living space, book a One Bedroom Suite and for added opulence the d’Angleterre Suites will not disappoint. For the ultimate luxury, the Royal Suite is a glorious sanctuary of heritage and contemporary design, with a large balcony overlooking the square.
Gourmands are well catered for. The hotel’s Marchal Restaurant won its first Michelin star in 2014, which it has maintained every year since. Diners enjoy exquisite French and Nordic fusion cuisine in a stylish modern dining room and out on the terrace, while the extensive Marchal Breakfast includes both à la carte and buffet options. Meanwhile, the Balthazar Champagne Bar is Denmark’s premium spot for enjoying a glass of bubbly or sophisticated cocktail, with live DJ sets at weekends. For those with a sweet tooth, Maison d’Angleterre serves delicious freshly baked cakes and pastries to enjoy at the hotel or to take home as a souvenir.
