Miyajima

Ride the ferry to the beautiful island of Miyajima, passing the UNESCO-listed Itsukushima Shrine marked by the Great Torii gates built 200-metres offshore, which appear to float on the water. Dine on the island’s celebrated oysters, wander among the delightfully tame local deer and take the cable car to the top of Mount Misen for wonderful views and hiking.

Miyajima

A romantic and peaceful island, Miyajima translates as ‘Shrine Island.’ Like the torii gates, the centuries-old shrine is unique for being built over water and is a must-see attraction. Located in a small inlet, the shrine is a complex of buildings that include a prayer hall, main hall and noh theatre stage, all connected by wooden walkways over the water.
