Campeche
Built by the Spanish to protect the city from marauding pirates, Campeche’s walls and ramparts reveal a wealth of history in the pastel-hued buildings, cobbled streets, and remaining baluartes (bastions) of this little-known city. Ancient forts stand guard, though today they welcome visitors to the Museo de Arqueologia Maya rather than warding off the fearsome pirates.
As you stroll around the city, or take one of the tram tours, the city’s history comes alive in the well-preserved colonial buildings and narrow streets, while outside the historic walls, the Campeche of today unfolds in a bustling market and quaint malecón (promenade). Further afield lies the beguiling Mayan site of Edzna.
