Anna Kell

At the age of five, I was thrown into an Italian ski school in a sleepy village in the Dolomites...despite not speaking a word of Italian at the time! Over the last two decades (and many slope-side hot chocolates later), I've explored every corner of the Dolomites, from the charming South Tyrolean villages to the lively, larger resorts and I've grown to love all of them, all in equal measures.

The spectacular scenery, the people, the sunny tree-lined slopes and the food are what draw me back to the Dolomites each and every time. My love for Italy extends to Sicily, where I lived in Palermo for nearly a year. I've recently ticked off each of Sicily's Aeolian islands (Stromboli being my favourite), just in time before the world finds out about these hidden island gems! This year, I spent six weeks exploring South Africa, although I still don't feel like I've scratched the surface of this beautiful country. Next on my list would be a safari in Kenya or Namibia or the Dolomites in the summer.

My top tips

  • I had the best carbonara pasta of my life in the Dolomites. If you're serious about food and skiing in equal measures, then Italy is the place for you.

  • Choose one day to wake up early and be there to take the first lift up onto the slopes for breakfast and hot coffee on the mountain - you'll also get to enjoy the slopes at their best before anyone else. You won't regret it!

  • Always opt for the wider-area ski pass if you have the option. It's always best to have the choice of going further afield, should you end up there.
