In November 2018, a team of Egyptian archaeologists made one of the most significant discoveries of nearly 50-years at Saqqara. An ancient Egyptian burial ground for the former city of Memphis, the site is home to the area’s oldest pyramid, the Step Pyramid of Djoser. More recently, excavations have unearthed the ornate tomb of a priest and his family. This dates to 2450 BC and has lain untouched for over 4,400 years. The inscriptions reveal that the priest’s name was Wahtye. Along with the tomb, this four-room chamber is filled with ancient statues, colourful hieroglyphics and, paintings depicting his story, along with precious information about daily life in ancient Egypt. While the tomb is not open to the public, we have arranged for special permission from the Ministry of Antiquities for an exclusive 60-minute visit. This can be incorporated into a guided visit to Saqqara. A must for anyone interested in ancient Egypt, the discovery of Wahtye’s tomb is the subject of a Netflix documentary, Secrets of the Saqqara Tomb, which we would recommend you watch before the visit. In this exclusive experience, you will be able to see and touch 4,000year old mummified real pieces.
