Tsumago

One of the original resting stops on the famous Nakasendo Walking Trail, the delightful town of Tsumago is like walking back in time, full of beautifully-preserved wooden buildings from the Edo Period. Today the main road is closed to traffic, leaving visitors to explore Tsumago’s historic architecture, inns and accommodation which once catered to travellers journeying between Kyoto and Edo.

Tsumago

The Nakasendo Walking Trail was the route connecting Kyoto with Edo (now Tokyo) during the Edo Period in 1603-1867. There were many post towns along the way and Tsumago is an excellent example. Visitors can walk the trail between Tsumago and Magome for a glimpse into feudal Japan, passing through villages where time has stood still amid beautiful forest scenery.
