Aomori

The northernmost city of Honshu, Japan’s main island, Aomori City is best known for its amazing summer festival, Nebuta Matsuri, where large lantern floats parade flanked by taiko drums, musicians and dancers. Depicting figures from Japanese culture, these spectacular floats take up to a year to design and build and the festival attracts huge crowds who delight in joining the lively celebrations.

Aomori

Aomori’s Nebuta Matsuri is one of the three great festivals of the Tohoku region, along with Akita’s Kanto Matsuri and Sendai’s Tanabata. Held between 2-7th August each year, a visit is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. But if the timing does not work, visit the waterfront Nebuta Waresse, a museum dedicated to the festival, recreating the atmosphere, history and traditions.
