Storfjord Hotel, with its panoramic views to the fjord and warm welcome is one of a kind in Norway. Its beautiful décor with sheepskins, tweeds and rough wood, and antiques and knickknacks dotted about give this boutique hotel a charming ambience.
Incredible setting with sweeping fjord views
Beautifully decorated using antiques, tweeds and lots of roaring fires
Close to Alesund city and airport
A local couple offer incredible food safaris that are truly one of a kind
Storfjord is a real find. Nestled above the fjord with some of the best views to be had, it combines modern comforts with traditional log cabin exteriors, and tasteful contemporary interiors. With several outbuildings housing suites as well as the main cabin where the wonderful sitting rooms and mezzanine area can be found, this hotel feels a lot bigger than its 32 rooms.
The focal point of the property is the homely sitting room. Grab a book from the library and while away the afternoon in front of the roaring log fire; staff are never far away with their selection of freshly-baked biscuits!
An open plan kitchen shows the superb chef at work from a vast dining table; or if you prefer something more intimate then the smaller tables next door close to a crackling log fire will appeal. Meals are based on local ingredients and traditional dishes with a twist, so expect gourmet cuisine despite the rustic setting.
Rooms are large and all differ in style, some with traditional four-poster beds. Fabrics are rich from tweeds to tartans and sheepskins to leathers, and armchairs are deep and never far from an open fire or a tea and coffee table. There are rooms within the main hotel itself and three separate annexes - views look out either to the Fjord or across the surrounding hills and forest.
Outside there are ample, easy-going walks to be found as well as more challenging hikes to be discovered. The crystal-clear water is ever near, so boat rides and kayaking are on offer in abundance. Helicopters can be arranged to take you on an incredible sightseeing tour – a must to marvel at the beauty of the fjords from a privileged perspective.
The panoramic views can also be enjoyed from the sauna and outdoor hot tub at the small spa.
Storfjord works well for those wishing to make the most of the region whilst not having to sacrifice on comfort and style. You can combine a stay here with Union Oye and Brosundet too for a stellar mix of hotels, totally unique from one another yet each with its unique charm.
When to visit
Make sure you sit out on their deck swathed in their sheepskins having a glass of cold wine overlooking the fabulous Storfjord or take the wonderful 62degrees North boat up into the Fjords for a day's adventure.
