Gal Oya National Park
One of Sri Lanka’s most untouched and quietest national parks, Gal Oya’s diverse terrain of lakes and jungle forest is set against a striking mountain backdrop and home to Asian elephants, endemic toque macaque, sloth bears, leopard and water buffalo, as well as a diverse range of bird species, including eagles, herons, egrets, storks and oriole.
With Sri Lanka's largest inland body of water, the Senanayake Samudraya Lake, Gal Oya is unique in providing the chance to take a boat safari alongside the usual jeep drives. Gal Oya is also home to the Veddas, a tribe descended from Sri Lanka’s indigenous community, who offer a fascinating opportunity to learn about the early inhabitants and their traditional way of life.
