The last refuge of traditional Buddhist culture, the Kingdom of Bhutan is one of the world’s most isolated nations. Landlocked between China and India by the Himalayas, the country has preserved its ancient culture and unique traditions, making it a compelling and enriching travel experience. Punakha River Lodge is &Beyond’s first property in Bhutan and is located on the banks of the Mo Chu River in

the peaceful Punakha Valley. The area is dotted with palaces, temples, and hilltop monasteries whose colourful prayer flags flutter in the breeze. The mountain scenery is spectacular, the hiking trails superb, and the Bhutanese people both warm and welcoming. The lodge has an intimate vibe with a maximum of 20 guests and has been built to take advantage of the fabulous views across the valley to the Himalayan Mountains. Inspired by the surrounding natural beauty, the lodge combines traditional Bhutanese architecture with modern luxury and sits in perfect harmony within the landscape. Outdoor enthusiasts can indulge in a range of activities including hiking and archery, while the onsite spa offers deep relaxation and spiritual nourishment to soothe mind, body, and soul.

The accommodation comprises six safari-style Tented Suites sleeping up to two guests, a River Suite designed for couples and a Family Suite, sleeping up to four. Each Tented Suite boasts traditional design, and all are positioned to ensure guests’ privacy. Along with a large comfortable bed and stylish Bhutanese furnishings, there is a desk area, daybed and ensuite bathroom with separate WC, bathtub, as well as indoor and outdoor showers. There is also a spacious furnished veranda from which to soak up the views. Amenities include a coffee maker, climate control, Wi-Fi, safe, and hairdryer. These suites have the option for an additional bed for children aged 3-16 years, with cots available for younger guests.

For a romantic stay, couples can book the River Suite, which is spread over two floors. The ground floor hosts a spacious lounge, dining area, and kitchen, while upstairs guests will find a sumptuous bedroom with open ensuite bathroom and freestanding bathtub. The veranda has a private hot tub and stylish double lounger. Additional amenities include a bar and overhead fans.

The Family Suite comprises two interconnected suites each with an ensuite bathroom, private veranda, and outdoor shower. The suites share a large living room with dining area, a bar and spacious veranda with its own swimming pool.

Food is locally inspired and seasonal, and the lodge uses produce from its own organic vegetable garden. Guests can choose from a variety of dining locations. Along with in-room dining, meals can be enjoyed along the riverbank, in the paddy fields, by the large, shared swimming pool or the deck of the main lodge. Private dining and a private butler service are also both available. There is an outdoor kitchen and firepit, for convivial evening relaxation and for those interested in learning more about Bhutanese cuisine, the outdoor interactive kitchen hosts traditional cooking classes (chargeable).

Rates include all meals, beverages, soft drinks and local wines, spirits, and beers. Champagne, cognacs, fine wines, and premium spirits are available for an extra charge. Special dietary requirements can be catered for if requested in advance.

The main lodge includes a spa and yoga studio set in a beautiful orange orchard. There are massage treatment rooms, a hot stone bath and a serene space for meditation and yoga practice (all chargeable). For warm days, the large infinity pool lined with comfortable loungers is the ideal spot to refresh and rejuvenate after a day of activities and sightseeing. Guests can also choose from a range of onsite activities including archery, white water rafting (chargeable), kayaking, birding, and mountain biking. The hiking is superb, and an extensive network of walking trails can be accessed across the river over the suspension bridge.

The lodge is also well placed for exploring further afield with easy access to the Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten. A 45-minute hike along the river, this spectacular three-storey hilltop stupa is one of the area’s major landmarks. Other local attractions include the famous Punakha Dzong and the Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang Nunnery, a Buddhist college for nuns.
