Corfu

Located in the Ionian Sea just off the northwest coast of mainland Greece, Corfu is one of Greece's more popular Greek Islands and amongst British travellers, who have taken the island into its heart. Its lush green interior is truly beautiful and the combination of hot dry summers and winter rain helps sustain the island with an abundance of vegetation and olive trees. Corfu has a colourful history, with occupations from France, Italy and Britain leaving their mark on the architecture; as such Corfu Town (Kerkyra) is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Beautifully preserved, the landmark buildings, monuments and Byzantine Fortress create a stunning skyline across the east coast.

North and South Corfu differ in both landscape and style. To the north, expect quaint fishing villages and tranquil bays, and to the south, you’ll find buzzy towns and beachfront resorts. Our Corfu luxury holidays show you the best of both sides of the islands with tailor-made trips from our award-winning travel specialists.

FAQs about Corfu Holidays

  • What is the best month to go to Corfu?

The ideal time to visit Corfu is between May and October when the weather is warm, and the island is in full bloom. July and August are the busiest months, while May, June, September, and October offer a more tranquil experience.

We recommend September as the best month since it’s in between the school holiday crowds and before the summer heat starts to fade off.

  • What is the difference between north Corfu and south?

The south and north of Corfu have distinct differences with the north being the quieter of the two.

On the northeastern side, expect lots of bays and flourishing fishing villages making the most of the influx of tourists. Quaint tavernas, boutiques and souvenir shops make for an ideal stopover, either by land or boat.

In comparison, the south of the island has a busier feel, with more resort-styled towns hugging the coastline, between strips of attractive pebble and sandy beach. Benitses, 20 minutes south of the airport, has a pretty little marina and village square, with a good choice of tourist shops and restaurants.

  • Which is the best part of Corfu to stay?

Both the north and south are idyllic places to stay on holiday in Corfu depending on the type of trip you want.

The northern coastline lends itself to those wishing to hire a boat and explore the popular villages of Kassiopi, Agios Stephanos, Ipsos and Kalami, the latter now made famous from the BBC series, The Durrells. A more low-key area of the island, here is best for adults and couples looking for a culture-filled quiet escape.

The south is where you’ll find resort-style accommodation, perfect for families looking to make the most out of their hotel and surrounding area. You’ll still find charming village squares but enjoyed with the comfort of world-class amenities and facilities.
