Monthly Climate Guide for Greece
, Greece
Average temperatures (Celsius) and rainfall (mm)
Greece experiences a Mediterranean climate characterised by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. However, due to its diverse geography, the country's weather patterns can vary from region to region, with the mountainous areas getting much colder in the winter and more southern islands, such as Crete, having warmer weather later in the year.
Throughout Greece, the summer months of June, July, and August enjoy scorching temperatures that often exceed 30℃. Many think this is the best time to visit Greece, however as it is the peak tourist season, especially on the popular islands, you should expect crowded beaches and bustling streets. If you prefer milder temperatures and fewer crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons. In spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October), Greece offers pleasant weather with temperatures ranging from 15℃ to 25℃. These seasons are ideal for exploring historical sites, taking scenic hikes, and enjoying the beauty of the Greek landscapes without overheating. And this time of year is particularly good for those travelling with children.
While not an overly rainy country, Greece does get some wet weather in the winter. Greece in November, up until February, is when the country receives the most rainfall, with January being the wettest month. Winter showers can be intermittent but can also bring heavy downpours. The summer months are generally dry, with minimal rainfall.
Overall, the best time to go to Greece depends on your preferences. If you enjoy warm weather and a buzzy atmosphere, the summer months are perfect for you. However, if you prefer milder temperatures and a more relaxed experience, the shoulder seasons will be more suitable.
The Best time to visit Greece by Season
Picking the best time to visit Greece depends on what kind of holiday you’re planning. From dining alfresco along the coast in the summer to taking in the fascinating cultural sites during an autumn visit to the cities, there are endless things to see and do in Greece throughout the year.
Below are some of our favourite ways to enjoy the very best of Greece all year round.

Make the most of its legendary beauty by knowing the best time to visit Greece to tour its famous islands or study its equally famous history.
Greek Islands Hopping
The best time of year to go island hopping in Greece is between May and October, with the peak tourist season being July and August. From the landscape to the style of food, the beaches and the character, each Greek island has its own personality, suiting a different type of traveller at different times of the year.
If you’re looking for buzzy nightlife and a fun atmosphere, head to the party islands of Mykonos and Santorini in July and August, where there’s glitz and glamour aplenty, with fantastic restaurants and beachside bars. To make the most of those islands without the crowds, go in spring or autumn, which are both fantastic seasons for a honeymoon in Greece.
For a more low-key experience in the summer, the smaller Cyclades islands of Milos, Sifnos, Naxos and Paros still have undiscovered secluded bays waiting for you. Meanwhile, Corfu has long been a favourite for family holidays to Greece in May and June, as well as July and August thanks to direct flights and child-friendly hotels. While Zakynthos in May half term and the school summer holidays tick all the boxes for families with teens. And, in the autumn, head to Crete for the last of the golden sunshine.
Greece’s cultural heritage
Visiting ancient sites is a must-do when in Greece. The country is home to some of the most iconic archaeological wonders in the world. The best time of year to visit Greece’s main historical attractions is in spring and autumn – April and May or September and October. Temperatures are in the mid-to-high 20s so not too hot for sightseeing, plus the crowds are smaller. During these shoulder months you can really experience places like Athens as a local, without hordes of other tourists. Wander through the narrow streets of Plaka, indulge in delicious street food at the vibrant Central Market, or sip a cup of traditional Greek coffee in a streetside café.
Along with its ancient civilisation, Greece is also known for its seasonal events and festivals – which take place throughout the year. One of the most famous is the Athens Epidaurus Festival, showcasing Greek drama and music from May to October each year. Then there are the colourful Carnival celebrations, which take place all over Greece in March or February to mark the beginning of Lent. And, if you’re in Athens in August, look out for the August Moon Festival during which musical events are held at iconic sites across the city, including the Acropolis. Experiencing Greece’s festivals will leave a lasting impression, giving you a deeper insight into the culture and traditions of the country.
Beach and Swim Life
Greece is renowned for its stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters, making it the perfect destination for beach lovers and water enthusiasts. The best time to go to Greece to make the most of its coast is during the spring/summer months, from June to September. With warm temperatures (up to mid 30℃) and long sunny days, the sea is as warm as bath water, so this is the ideal time for a refreshing dip in the sea.
In the high season, between July and August, the beaches can get quite crowded, so if you prefer a more private experience, consider visiting in June or September. Greece boasts a plethora of gorgeous beaches that cater to different preferences. Santorini's Red Beach, with its dramatic red volcanic cliffs, is a must-visit for its unique beauty. Mykonos offers a vibrant beach scene, with Paradise Beach and Super Paradise Beach being the go-to spots for partygoers. Navagio Beach in Zakynthos, famous for its shipwreck, is surrounded by bright turquoise waters and is great for snorkelling or diving. Keen windsurfers and kitesurfers should head to the likes of Paros and Naxos, where strong winds create ideal conditions.
