Hotel Egilsen

Hotel Egilsen is small and intimate ten bedroom boutique hotel in a historic house, located by the harbour in the fishing town of Stykkisholmur on the beautiful Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Owner-run, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.

Stykkishólmur, Snaefellsnes Peninsula
  • A small and intimate guest house set in a traditional Icelandic fishing village

  • A great base from which to explore this little-discovered part of Iceland

  • Explore the West Fjords by boat and get the chance to see whales from January to April

  • In winter try and spot the Northern Lights in the pitch-black night skies overlooking the bay

Set in the small fishing town of Stykkisholmur, Hotel Egilsen is steeped in the history and legend for which this part of Iceland is famous. With only ten guest rooms the hotel is small and intimate, with a simple yet stylish design, excellent food and a very warm welcome.

The hotel's owner, Greta, oversees most arrangements, from the delicious home cooked daily breakfast to afternoon tea with waffles and home made blueberry jam. She can also provide advice on local tours and activities to help guests make the most of their time in the area. The cosy lounge is the hub of the place, with a comfortable and convivial seating area, small honesty bar and library.

The charming town of Stykkisholmur is home to a number of excellent local restaurants, all within an easy walk of the hotel. The setting of the town itself is a particular draw, with stunning views across the West Fjords and out to sea. The town is still relatively untouched by tourism and provides an intriguing slice of rural Icelandic life.

Snæfellsjökull National Park and glacier is easily reached on a day trip from Hotel Egilsen, while closer to home the naturally occurring geothermal pool, Sundlaug Stykkishólms, is located within a 5-minute drive of the property.

Top tip:

Climb the hill overlooking the harbour for stunning views across the bay. In winter it is also a great place from which to try and spot the Northern Lights - just remember to take a torch with you as the path is very dark!
