The Imperial is a beautiful hotel with an old colonial and art deco feel, set right in the heart of New Delhi. The Imperial is perfectly situated for sightseeing and shopping and would appeal to guests who appreciate history and a charming formal air.
Centrally located and easy to get around, The Imperial is situated on Connaught Place and a stone's throw away from India Gate
The Imperial projects classic Anglo/Indian luxury and is seeped in history - there are 7,000 paintings and 2,500 original photos hanging in the hotel's hallway galleries, and a tour of all the art and artefacts is available - this hotel would definitely appeal to history buffs
The Spice Route is stunning, beautiful hand painted murals throughout the pillars and walls
The atmosphere is relaxed and refined, although some may find it a tad formal
Built in 1931 by Edwin Lutyens, The Imperial is situated in the centre of Delhi within walking distance of Connaught Place, the major shops and monuments. This 5 star hotel is a mix of Victorian, old colonial and art deco design and houses a treasure trove of paintings, sculptures and murals.
The Imperial offers guests 235 restored rooms and suites. Rooms feature king size beds with exclusive linen from Porthault, France, beautiful marble baths with hand showers, Fragonard bathroom amenities, minibar, tea / coffee maker, a Bang & Olufsen TV and in-built DVD player, high speed WiFi, dual phone line and an electronic safe.
Relax and unwind at the Imperial Spa where you can enjoy a range of treatments from Aromatherapy and Swedish massage, to body scrubs and foot reflexology. There are three restaurants serving Indian, Chinese and Continental cuisine along with landscaped gardens and a swimming pool.
Local attractions include the Red Fort, built in 1638 by Emperor Shah Jahan, the Jama Masjid built in 1656 by Emperor Shah Jahan (who also built Taj Mahal), Chandni Chowk one of the city's oldest markets, Raj Ghat set amidst large, manicured gardens, Humayun’s Tomb, an elegant example of early Mughal architecture and the war memorial arch of India Gate. The hotel's location also means guests can enjoy the salubrious shopping and eating out opportunities of this upmarket area, with easy to access Old Delhi.
We feel that The Imperial is one of Delhi's finest historic hotels, however in recent years service has become a little slower. We still feel that this is one of the best places to stay in Delhi due to the overwhelming history and charm.
When to visit
After sightseeing, why not take tea on the lawn at the hotel - apparently this is where Nehru, Gandhi, Jinnah and Lord Mountbatten sometimes met to discuss the partition of India and the birth of Pakistan
