Kyoto, Kyoto & Around, Japan
Hoshinoya Kyoto
  • Escape to this glorious hideaway retreat on the Oigawa River.

  • Live the ryokan lifestyle, magnificently updated for the 21st century.

  • Meditate on the intense beauty of the forest and riverside setting.

  • Awaken your spirituality with morning yoga, incense ceremonies and learning the art of flower arranging.

A traditional wooden Hoshinoya river boat transports guests on the short journey from Arashiyama along the Oigawa River, to a small complex of buildings dating back over a century. Beautifully renovated, the hotel is a contemporary update on the traditional ryokan inn. The atmospheric interiors skilfully incorporate traditional tatami mat flooring, sliding paper washi screens, private veranda, latticed lanterns, sensual Japanese wood and walls decorated with handcrafted Kyoto paper, printed with woodblock motifs.

The stone path that winds through the complex is resplendent with cherry blossom trees in spring and vibrant scarlet maple leaves in autumn, while the only sounds are the burbling river, the distant ring of temple bells and the wildlife. The Japanese art of hospitality, omotenashi is more than evident, with discreet but incredibly helpful service.

The 25 rooms are spread across the complex, among the forested paths and overlooking the river. Each one strikes the ideal balance between traditional craftsmanship and modern design and comfort. Curved bamboo seating, sliding screens, plush beds and en-suite bathrooms with deep cypress wood tubs are perfect for relaxation. Do not expect a TV but there is the opportunity to brush up your calligraphy skills while taking in the views.

Foodies will be in their element owing to the culinary talent of chef, Ichiro Kubota who honed his considerable skills in London at Umu, where he gained a Michelin star. Dinner is an exquisitely presented kaiseki multicourse feast, served in the intimate restaurant or in guestrooms, while a Japanese or Western breakfast is served in-room.

Guests can start the day by connecting to their spirituality with morning yoga in the Hidden Garden and take the opportunity to witness an incense ceremony or try ikebana, flower arranging. Drinks are served in the Library and Lounge or for cocktails head to the Salon & Bar Kura. While there is no spa, guests can enjoy a relaxing in-room shiatsu massage or partake in a Zen-inspired detox programme with a Japanese acupuncture and herbal expert.

The hillside area of Arashiyama was a former playground of Kyoto’s court nobles and is known for its bamboo forests. West of Kyoto, guests depart from the Hoshinoya Kyoto Boat Landing on the south side of the Togetsukyo Bridge for the soothing 15-minute boat ride to the hotel. After the hustle and bustle of Kyoto and its iconic cultural highlights, the Hoshinoya offers a calm and serene place to unwind and relax.
