Average time to visit

For travel to Madagascar, any time of year is fine for a visit except from January to March, when heavy rainfall in many areas can make some roads all but impassable, and when there’s a high risk of cyclones in the east and northeast. In general, the best time to travel in most areas is April and October/November. The coolest time to travel anywhere is during the dry season (May to October).

Mauritius enjoys a typically tropical climate with year-round warmth, although the south-east trade winds help keep things fresh. The summer months are from December to April, when it can be humid. The winter runs from May to November, and while cooler and drier, is best described as akin to a perfect English summer.

The best months to visit Mauritius are May to early December. January and February are the wettest months. Cyclones rarely hit Mauritius but cyclones way out at sea can bring days of squally rain. Coastal temperatures range between 25°C and 33°C in summer and between 18°C and 24°C in winter. On the high central plateau it will be some 5°C cooler. The highlands are also the wettest part of the island and it can rain here at any time of year. When the winds are at their strongest in July and August it can feel cooler on the east coast. These conditions make Mauritius one of the world most popular kitesurfing destinations. For calmer waters and lighter winds, head to the west coast during this period.

Itinerary

Day 1-4

Andasibe, Eastern Madagascar, Madagascar

Your adventure through wild Madagascar begins. Your private guide will pick you up from your hotel and will be accompanying you over the next few days. Leaving the capital, you’ll set off on a four-hour drive east, passing local, village life and paddy fields.  You’ll arrive at the rainforest reserve of Andasibe-Mantadia National Park and your base for the next three nights is Vakona Lodge. You will stay in one of the family bungalows that are scattered amongst the gardens and rainforest.
On your first full day you will hike into the secondary forests of Andasibe. One of the most extraordinary experiences of this trip will be when you hear the eerie, call of the Indri and observe this lemur effortlessly propelling between branches. Tonight, head out in search for the nocturnal species of animals, spotting colourful chameleons, geckos and adorable mouse lemurs.
The following day you’ll trek through the lush, dense, primary rainforest of the Mantadia region of the park. As you and your guide scan the thick vegetation, you’ll be lucky enough to see a diverse array of wildlife, from amphibians, to reptiles, lemurs and insects. A particularly exciting species to spot is the giraffe weevil, a bizarre red insect deriving its name from an extended neck - much like that of a giraffe!

Accommodation: Vakona Forest Lodge ( 3 nights )
Day 4-9

Mauritius

Beach bliss awaits you. This morning you’ll catch a flight over the Indian Ocean and descend on the breathtakingly beautiful island of Mauritius. After being met at the airport, which is encased by rolling, lush hills, you’ll be driven to the wild south of the island to check in at Shanti Maurice. Ask one of our consultants about booking you a villa; incredibly spacious and with an inviting private pool, it’s the ideal set up for a family who want to spend quality time together and still have some privacy. At Shanti Maurice you can really immerse yourself in the experiences on offer for families, perhaps cycling through this untouched, wild region of the island. Or tantalise your taste buds with a traditional cookery class, led by an expert chef.

Accommodation: Shanti Maurice ( 5 nights )
