Nomadic Expeditions Wilderness Camp
  • A remote, private camp close to the ancient ruins of Mongolia’s first capital of Karakorum
  • Experience life on the remote Mongolian steppes, living as the nomadic tribes have done for centuries
  • Private gers are fitted with comfortable beds and traditional hand-carved furniture
  • Delicious twists on Mongolian cuisine prepared by the camp chef

Perched on the slopes of Shankh Mountain, close to the ruins of Mongolia’s ancient capital city, the Nomadic Expeditions Wilderness Camp offers a unique opportunity to experience the traditional way of life on the vast Mongolian steppes. With no real settlements for miles around, the vast open skies and gently swaying grassland surround this private camp, allowing a rare glimpse into life at the edge of civilisation. Each of the tents, or ‘gers’, are constructed in the traditional style, from wood and canvas, with plenty of space for a comfortable double bed and handmade furniture. Beds are cosy and draped in locally made blankets and soft linens, and they are heated by wood burning stove during the colder spells at night. There are two shared bathroom gers, with plush towels, warm robes and hairdryers, and hot water for a short shower, complete with biodegradable toiletries.

Meals are prepared and served in the main dining ger at the heart of the camp, drawing inspiration from traditional Mongolian dishes such as ‘shorlog’, a traditional barbeque and ‘chansan mah’, or boiled meat on the bone. Warming, hearty fare is the cuisine of choice in Mongolia and the camp chefs work hard to produce elegant and refined versions of local dishes. Western fare is also served alongside the more local cuisine.

Spend your days exploring the steppe on horseback, visiting the remarkable ruins of Karakorum, a once great city, or soaking up the peaceful atmosphere at Erdene Zuu, Mongolia’s oldest monastery.
