Best time to visit

Average time to visit

If you're visiting Namibia, the best thing to do is avoid their summer, which is extremely hot. Therefore, the best time to visit Namibia is in winter (May-September) but bear in mind that the desert regions can be bitterly cold at this time of year. The climate of the southern coast is hospitable from February to May, but quite cool and misty year-round, and particularly windy in August.

Itinerary

Fly to Windhoek
Day 1-2

Zannier Reserve, Namibia

Getting to Namibia is a breeze. Fly overnight to Windhoek, connecting via Johannesburg, where you are met in arrivals and driven by private car to your first stop. Omaanda is a soothing balm after your long flight, understated luxury blends with local Owambo style for a faultless sense of place. Think raised views across the savannah from your private terrace, true attention to detail where even the décor is thoughtfully curated, and one of Namibia’s best spas which rejuvenates the body as well as the mind. Indulge this afternoon with a massage before relaxing by the boma’s firepit, cocktail in hand.
Your 4x4 is delivered to your hotel later this afternoon, where one of our local representatives take you through the routes on your trip as well as lots of local tips. In addition, a Europcar rep will show you the ropes when it comes to your 4x4. We take care of the little details including extra tyres and super cover, so you just have to worry about stopping to admire the vistas as you cross the striking landscapes along the way. Awake with the dawn the next morning and be prepared for an overload of cute by spending the sunrise with the meerkats that live on Omaanda’s reserve.

Accommodation: Zannier Hotels Omaanda ( 1 night )
Day 2-4

Sossusvlei, Namibia

Your adventure starts this morning, as you set out on your road trip through Namibia’s arid centre. Shortly after leaving the capital you leave the everyday behind as the tarmac ends. Take the road less travelled, the Spreetshoogte Pass offers extraordinary views of the Namib Desert from the top of the mountain road. Stop at Solitaire as you near your destination for an Instagram worthy bite of Namibia’s ‘best apple pie’ from the famous bakery. Only 20 minutes from Sesriem, the gateway to Sossusvlei, Hoodia Desert Lodge is a world away from the typical. Hidden amidst the mountains of the Namib, perched over the banks of the Tsauchab River, the horizons stretch out endlessly all around. Rustically elegant, Hoodia artfully uses natural materials so you feel at one with the desert; from the spacious thatched chalets replete with outside shower from which to watch the blazing stars to the local art adorning the main lodge - dive into the freedom of the desert.
Embrace African traditions on your first evening and watch the lazy African sun set over the red dunes of the Namib Nauklauft from a private sundowner, setting the sky on fire with a G&T in hand. After a restful sleep under the star strewn skies, set out in the dark of morning, entering the Sossusvlei area as the sun rises. The dunes slowly morph from deep brown through to burning orange as dawn breaks over the sands, a truly magical sight. Your expert guide brings the desert to life, where even the littlest creature plays a part in the show. Hike across the desert sands on secret paths that avoid the crowds where Deadvlei and Sossusvlei await. Seek out the iconic image of petrified trees framed by towering ochre dunes before relaxing in the dappled shade of a camelthorn tree where a picnic is waiting. This afternoon is yours for the taking, wander along the floor of the immense Sesriem Canyon or simply fall into the infinite vistas as you laze by hoodia’s pool.

Accommodation: Hoodia Desert Lodge ( 2 nights )
Day 4-6

Swakopmund, Namibia

Voyaging north hugging the desert, you drive towards the coast and the Germanic town of Swakopmund. But don’t be fooled by the sleepy aura, thrills can be found in plenty in the adventure centre of Namibia. Cornerstone Guesthouse puts you in the heart of the action, while set on a quiet street, the town centre is only minutes away. A firm favourite with our staff, indulge in some modern comforts in this charmingly chic boutique hotel. Set out and explore the Atlantic shoreline or simply lounge in the lush gardens before catching up on the news on your room’s satellite TV. Make use of Cornerstone’s superb concierge and book a table at one of the town’s  excellent restaurants. Feast on freshly caught seafood while sipping on crisp South African wine, sample local Walvis Bay oysters for some indulgence with a local flavour.
The cold Atlantic waters might not invite a swim, but a plethora of marine life thrives in the coast around Swakopmund. Spend your morning being enchanted by the capers and grace of the nearby Cape Fur Seals found at Pelican Point. Glide across the waves in a kayak while the inquisitive and mischievous seals gambol around you, a magical experience. If very lucky, flamingos may flounce past on the nearby shore and thousands of cormorants fly over on their way to the open sea. After your maritime escapade, the afternoon is open to do whatever you wish; fall out of the sky and witness the true scale of the desert on a skydive, beat your way across the sands on a sunset quadbike drive or sample some local draughts during a beer tasting at the local microbrewery.

Accommodation: Cornerstone Guesthouse ( 2 nights )
Day 6-8

Twyfelfontein, Damaraland, Namibia

Set off early this morning and leave the coast behind as you venture inland to the barren mountains that epitomise Damaraland. Keep an eye out as you go, desert wildlife often can be glimpsed along the way, the graceful silhouettes of oryx a common sight by the road. Waiting amongst the boulders and crags of Damaraland is Mowani Mountain Camp, the stark peaks frame the horizon and the sweeping plains below where elephants roam. Every aspect at Mowani is designed to make the most of the extraordinary views, from the private terrace of your chalet to the sunset deck to your four-poster bed - and even the pool, it’s a place to get lost in.
For those who can stop staring at the huge skies, there is a profusion of activities on offer to tantalise even the most discerning. Spend the day tracking desert elephants across the at first glance, desolate plains. These giants of the desert claim vast areas in which to wander, always on the search for water and catching sight of them is a thrill that can’t be beat. In the afternoons walk in the footsteps of history at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Twyfelfontein, where ancient bushman rock art can be found. Stretch out your limbs on one of the many self-guided nature trails that surround Mowani or simply recline by the pool and soak in the extraordinary setting.

Accommodation: Mowani Mountain Camp ( 2 nights )
Day 8-10

Ongava Private Game Reserve, Etosha, Namibia

Safari is on the horizon as your journey continues to the west to the celebrated Etosha National Park. Set in a remote corner of the 35,000-hectare Ongava private game reserve, Ongava Tented Camp boasts a superb location adjoining Etosha. With only eight tents, revel in the romance of the African bush and intimate atmosphere of this wild camp. Ongava Tented curves around a waterhole that draws in wildlife from far and wide, so you can watch giraffe quench their thirst from the chairs on your deck or even while lounging by the pool.  The natural style matches the mopane bush, blending the edges between outside and in; you can even wash while elephants spray water in the distance from your outside shower. The large tents offer a private space from which to escape to but the wild is never far - fall asleep to the primal sound of lions calling in the night, raising the hairs on your neck.
The waterholes of Etosha, the only permanent sources of water for hundreds of miles, are a beacon for an abundance of wildlife, and in the dry season these havens throng with activity. Set out in the early hours on a guided drive into the national park where simply sitting by the water can yield a true National Geographic moment. Return to the private reserve and explore the bush away from the crowds; approach rhino on foot with the assistance your expert guide or watch the lazy sun slowly set while you enjoy a G&T, perhaps as elephants graze nearby.

Accommodation: Ongava Tented Camp ( 2 nights )
Day 10-11

Central Highlands, Namibia

The epic road trip is coming to an end, as the road turns back towards Windhoek. However, one reward still awaits along the way. Okonjima is an inspirational stay, a refuge to the area’s wildlife where farmland dominates, and conflict is ever present. Arrive in time to track one of the iconic leopards of Okonjima through the dense bush, where the prize is a glimpse of these regal cats in their element. Back at the lodge, sit in the sala of your spacious chalet and admire the birds that flit around the feeders before dining by candlelight in the lapa. If time allows, unearth the vital work that the AfricCat Foundation undertakes throughout the country on a tour of the research facility on site.

Accommodation: Okonjima Luxury Bush Camp ( 1 night )
