Opus XVI was originally built to be Bergen's largest bank in 1876, and still proudly displays nods to the great heritage including original tiles and vault doors. The building was subsequently bought by the Grieg family - descendants of the famous Norwegian composer Edvard Greig - and their fascinating family history is displayed through a timeline and exhibits for any guests interested to find out more.
The hotel itself occupies a great position in the city, just a few steps from the historic UNESCO World Heritage Listed Bryggen, comprising the wharf and Hanseatic houses which have really put the city on the map for visitors. The funicular up to the beautiful viewpoint at Mount Fløyen is also a 2-minute walk from the hotel, and for more active guests the walk down to the city is just as scenic.
There are 65 rooms at the hotel with twin beds and interconnecting options also on offer, making this a great place for couples or families. All rooms feature walk-in showers, with the suites also offering a bath in addition. The style of the rooms varies slightly, as they are based around the four seasons of the year. Retaining original features, the decor is clean, modern Scandinavian style, with a real emphasis on different textures such as marble tiles, coloured glass and butter-soft leathers which creates a really cosy, welcoming atmosphere.
Restaurant XVI serves a buffet breakfast with à la carte hot options and is also open for lunch and dinner. The real focus here is on the amazing seafood, with the seafood tower a particularly popular option for locals and guests alike. During the summer months for a real treat you can indulge in an afternoon tea in one of the salons, where you can opt for traditional English, Nordic or Vegetarian options. A live pianist really adds to the atmosphere and creates a special experience.
