National Museum
The long-awaited National Museum is in the heart of Old Muscat, close to the Sultan's Palace. The museum aims to preserve and promote the Omani culture by showcasing the country's rich history.
The museum boasts over 5,000 items across 14 themed galleries. Covering a range of topics, the galleries include the Maritime History Hall, the Hall of Oman and the Outside World, the Hall of the Greatness of Islam, and the Earth and Man Hall. There is a fifteenth gallery dedicated to temporary exhibitions.
The focus is on quality rather than quantity; however, there is plenty to explore, including 43 digital immersive experiences. The museum also has a fully equipped learning centre and it has the region's first open storage concept, where visitors can learn about the process of preparing artefacts for display.
