Chachapoyas
High in the cloud forests of northern Peru, the city of Chachapoyas was founded by the Spanish, its elevated location providing a strategic advantage in their conquest. Yet it is the pre-Inca and pre-Columbian ruins that have earned the region its reputation for the fine archaeological sites that lie in the sweeping valleys and cloud-covered mountains surrounding the city.
