Naturalist Guides Insight on Travel that Makes a Difference

Costa Rica is celebrated for its breathtaking biodiversity, from lush rainforests and striking volcanic landscapes to extraordinary wildlife and exotic flora. Here, creating a positive impact on the environment and local communities isn’t just a goal—it’s a way of life.

Nowhere is this more evident than at Tortuga Lodge, a 50-acre private reserve bordering Tortuguero National Park, one of the country’s most renowned eco-tourism destinations. Scott Dunn Product Specialist, Tucker, sits down with Yewuison, one of Tortuga’s expert naturalist guides, to explore how tourism plays a vital role in conservation, community development and the preservation of cultural heritage.

Tourism as a Force for Positive Environmental Impact

Tortuga Lodge is not just a place to stay - it’s a pillar of support and a leader in environmental innovation. Eco-tourism in this region is deeply rooted in conservation, specifically focused on preserving the forest. As Yewuison explains, “60% of the area is forest, but only 1% is used for tourism, and 99% is protected.”

Environmental stewardship is evident in every aspect of the Tortuga experience—from solar-powered energy and a UV water purification system to eliminating single-use plastics and sourcing nearly half of its products locally. The lodge even developed a natural wastewater treatment system that harnesses microorganisms instead of harsh chemicals, helping to protect the surrounding forest and make a lasting environmental impact.

Tortuga Lodge’s conservation efforts extend beyond its grounds, playing a key role in preserving the region’s delicate ecosystems—down to its youngest and tiniest residents! During guided turtle observation tours, trained local experts share their knowledge with visitors while emphasizing the importance of protecting nesting sites. These tours replace the region's historical reliance on turtle hunting, offering a sustainable livelihood that prioritizes conservation and wildlife protection.

Investing in Communities

Tortuga Lodge is deeply committed to preserving local heritage. “We support the community in many ways,” says Yewuison. “A percentage of the hotel’s income goes to different schools, and we also support a local music group—we pay for instruments, hire teachers, and invest in their development. Once a month, we bring groups of local schoolchildren to teach them about the importance of protecting the forest, wildlife and biodiversity.”

Beyond education, the lodge creates meaningful employment opportunities for local residents. "We work closely with them to ensure that tourism enhances their way of life rather than disrupting it,” Yewuison adds. This dedication extends to preserving the region’s Afro-Caribbean culture. “There are many people here with African heritage, and we’re trying to revive and celebrate their traditions, including music, recipes and cultural practices.”

Teaching Through Travel

Nature specialists like Yewuison are more than just guides—they are educators, connecting visitors with Costa Rica’s vibrant ecosystems. With travelers from around the world often experiencing a rainforest for the first time, these experts play a vital role in fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the environment.

"For me, as a naturalist guide, my goal is to teach people the truth about the rainforest and immerse them in this incredible environment. I really see myself as a teacher during these tours,” says Yewuison. “It’s a unique experience to help visitors connect with nature in a meaningful way. That’s why we have created a special tour called the ‘Tortuguero Tour,’ where we show visitors our traditions and heritage, making the company more sustainable while also educating people about our history.”
