From the subtropical lowlands in the south up to glacier-capped mountains in the north, Yunnan is a province of extremes. The climate varies so much across this vast and diverse area, that it has given rise to an ancient Chinese saying: “You can enjoy all four seasons on the same mountain, with each just a few miles from the next”. Generally speaking, most of Yunnan province is mild in winter and cool in summer, with large variances in temperature occurring across the day. Mornings can start with a wintery chill, and warm up to 25°C by lunchtime. Spring and Autumn are mild and pleasant and the best times to visit Yunnan, despite May being the rainiest month of the year. For snow-capped mountains and dramatic alpine scenes, the winter months of November to January can be spectacular.

Itinerary

Day 1-4

Shangri-La, Yunnan, China

Upon arrival in Shangri-La, you will be welcomed and transferred to your resort. At 3,200m, you may want to take things slowly by spending time with the resort's Tibetan mastiff, Simba, or take an oil painting session before wrapping up the day with a relaxing farm-to-table dinner.

On your second day, you will visit the spectacular gold-roofed Sumtseling Monastery (established by the Fifth Dalai Lama in 1679), also known as Little Potala Palace. After lunch, take a drive around the UNESCO-listed Napa Hai lake, surrounded by mountains boasting vivid greenery, with yaks and horses roaming freely. Afterwards, stroll through quaint cobblestoned streets and traditional Tibetan buildings of Shangri-La's Old Town. If time and energy permits, visit the largest prayer wheel in the world (turn it around three times to be blessed with peace and longevity).

On your third day, embark on a tranquil hike on the mountains behind the resort, where you can enjoy activities such as mushroom picking or harvesting bamboo shoots (seasonality permitting). Visit a bustling local market with exotic fruits, delicious cured meats, yak cheese, wild mushroom and more. Continue to a traditional Tibetan home to partake in their daily life while enjoying local snacks, yak butter tea and local staples including tsampa.

On your final day, you will be transferred to the airport after breakfast. If you have more time, we recommend to extend your trip into a one-week holiday into the famed U-shaped Benzilan or the Lijiang Old Town.
