Western Madagascar
The ’wild’ west coast is renowned for its beautiful secluded beaches and is wonderfully undiscovered due to its inaccessibility (except by plane). Inland you are treated to baobab forests with the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Avenue des Baobabs, coral islands and strange karstic rock formations, or ’tsingy’, which make for a slightly surreal kind of paradise.
The private Anjajavy reserve on the west coast of Madagascar offers visitors the perfect combination of relaxing beach break and wildlife encounters with 450 hectares of dry deciduous forest and tsingy. A wildlife spotter’s paradise here you can spot Coquerel’s sifaka, fruit bats and the Madagascan fish eagle.
For the truly adventurous, the west is a treasure trove of off-the-beaten-track experiences with the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park offering an other-worldly exploration of the finest limestone rock pinnacles to be found in Madagascar with ladders, cables and suspension bridges allowing you to make the most of the panoramic views that this UNESCO World Heritage Site affords visitors. Break your journey here with visits to the famous Avenue des Baobabs with its fine examples of Grandidier’s baobabs and the intertwined Baobabs Amoureaux (‘Baobabs in love’). Close by you will find the Kirindy Reserve where you can see the giant jumping rat and the fossa; Madagascar’s largest mammal.
