Reconnect to nature and experience the quiet calm of Korean village life at Rakkojae Andong, within the 600-year-old UNESCO-listed Hahoe Folk Village. The village was in the heartland of the Joseon Dynasty, the rulers of Korea from 1392-1910 and is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for its layout, which reflects authentic Confucian ideals. Rakkojae Andong is found by the Hahoe Village ferry dock and comprises four separate choga houses, along with four hanok houses in the Giwa Main Complex, built to reflect the architecture of Changdeokgung Palace.

The Korean philosophy is to live in harmony with nature and all the accommodation has been designed to showcase the stunning landscape, relaxing sights, and soothing sounds of the natural world. Guestrooms seamlessly blend the timeless charm of old Korea with modern luxuries and amenities. Expect modern ensuite bathrooms with Aromatherapy Associates bathing products, robes and hairdryer, climate control, minibar stocked with local snacks and treats, Nespresso machine and kettle. While the main living rooms are simply and traditionally furnished with handpicked antiques, ondol underfloor heating, a low table, floor mattresses and bedding. Sleeping close to the heated floor is said to promote quality sleep and improve blood circulation.

Constructed from mud walls, thick grass-thatched roofs, and paper screen doors, choga houses were designed to comply with Confucian philosophy, with households segregated by gender. Both Anbang and Gunnunbang sleep two guests, while families and small groups can choose from Byulche and Sarangche. Alternatively, the hanoks of the Giwa Main Complex feature traditional black tiled roofs and are constructed from natural wood, stone, and clay. Both the Pavilion Room and Superior Suite sleep two guests or book the Deluxe Suite sleeping three or the Premium Suite sleeping up to four.

Guests can enjoy a complimentary breakfast with both Western and Korean options. For those wishing to embrace the full cultural experience, a Korean breakfast might include rice porridge, grilled mackerel, dried fish, kimchi, yoghurt, and barley tea. While there are restaurants within the village, dinner can be booked as required. There is also complimentary access to the wood-fired natural mud sauna, to promote relaxation and wellbeing. Further afield, guests can take the ferry across the river to Buyongdae cliff, which marks the end of the Taebaek Mountain Range. The climb to the top is rewarded with panoramic views of this 600-year-old village and snaking river. For those visiting in October, the Andong Mask Festival, celebrating traditional Korean dance is a spectacular not to be missed.
