Aliya Resort and Spa is a modern property with stunning views of the majestic Sigiriya Rock Fortress, one of the most important landmarks in the Cultural Triangle. Aliya is surrounded by greenery and the design is inspired by the Asian elephant.
Aliya means elephant in Sinhala, and the animal is featured in much of the design of the resort, including colours and art work
The Sri Lankan restaurant Nagula uses local cooking methods with clay stoves and pots, serving the dishes in a traditional style
The lobby and pool area offer breathtaking views of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress and lush countryside
The Suites have two bedrooms and two bathrooms, as well as the luxury of a private pool
Aliya is the Sinhala word for elephant, and this is the recurring theme of the resort, present in the polished grey concrete and the artwork dotted throughout the hotel and rooms.
The decor in the rooms is simple, contemporary and fresh, with lovely local flourishes such as pictures with Sinhalese writing and cushions with elephant designs.
Deluxe Rooms measure at 52 square metres and offer Queen size beds. Attic Rooms consist of a Deluxe Room with a small second bedroom up a spiral staircase. It is worth noting that the spiral staircase is steep and so would not be suitable for younger children.
The two Suites at the resort also boast two bedrooms, which are both on the ground floor and so more suitable for younger families. The spacious master bedroom has its own en-suite bathroom and King size bed. The second bedroom has a Queen size bed and also has its own bathroom. There is a small kitchenette and as an added luxury, guests can enjoy their own private pool.
There are three restaurants to choose from. Alaka is in the main hotel building and offers a buffet of Sri Lankan dishes. Nagula is set on the veranda of the resort's paddy museum and also serves Sri Lankan cuisine, prepared in a traditional village kitchen in clay pots. Makala is a Chinese restaurant, featuring a range of dishes from the Orient.
One of the highlights of Aliya is its beautiful infinity pool which has spectacular views towards the famous Sigiriya Rock Fortress and surrounding countryside. There is also a separate children's pool. The gym is complimentary and the resort also offers free group yoga sessions every morning.
There is a wonderful spa with eight treatment rooms. There are a range of treatments available including massages, facials and foot reflexology.
