The Mudhouse

The Mudhouse is an eco-friendly and rustic retreat located north east of Colombo airport. Spread over 60 acres and next to a lake, the Mudhouse is designed to have the feel of a traditional, rural Sri Lankan village.

Anamaduwa, Sri Lanka's West Coast, Sri Lanka
  • The Mudhouse has been designed as a Sri Lankan village, with cow dung floors and palm thatched roofs

  • There is a large vegetable garden where a huge range of produce is grown for the Mudhouse

  • Accommodation is suitable for both couples and families as there are options with multiple rooms and the huts are secluded

  • The Mudhouse is surrounded by nature with the restaurant looking out over a lake

The Mudhouse is a perfect place to escape for those who are slightly more adventurous and it's biggest selling point is its simplicity. The manager and founder Kumar and his staff will welcome you with an enormous smile and do all they can to make you feel welcome.

There are no signposts on the gravel road that winds to the settlement which adds to the feeling of remoteness and privacy of the huts dotted amongst the trees. The rooms are all different in size and design but all are built using traditional techniques and locally sourced materials. There is very limited electricity and therefore no hot water and the rooms are lit with oil lamps at night. Beds are comfortable and well protected with mosquito nets and all guests are provided with a torch for navigating when night falls. Showers are outdoors.

The surrounding landscape is a naturalist's dream with fantastic bird life on the lake and beautifully patterned butterflies everywhere.

Your meals are eaten in a separate hut which is incredibly tranquil. At night a camp fire is lit and hours can be spent under the stars. All the fruit and vegetables you will eat are grown on site and the food is simple and delicious local fare. The kitchen is by no means closed and many guests like to observe and learn traditional cooking techniques during their stay.
