Best time to visit

Average time to visit

Tanzania is a large country, with a varied climate. Generally, the long rains run from March to May - the temperature is warm and the humidity is high. June to October is the long dry season, and the short rains are in November and December, much lighter than the long rains. January and February are again dry (the short dry season) so this is another good time to visit.

Itinerary

Fly to Dar es Salaam
Day 1-5

Ruaha National Park, Tanzania

After arriving in Dar Es Salaam, you are met in arrivals and whisked off to the domestic terminal for your light aircraft flight to Tanzania’s remote south. As you near your destination, watch out for the tell-tale rivers that snake through Ruaha’s centre and the rotundly elegant baobabs that characterise this reserve. Bask in the wilderness of Ruaha National Park, this vast area is the size of Israel and yet few visitors discover its treasures, a truly exclusive safari escape. Perched along the edge of the Mwagusi escarpment, Ikuka Safari Camp commands some of the best views to be found anywhere in Africa. The rolling landscapes sweep out before you, and each of the seven luxuriously appointed and spacious tented suites make the most of this boon from the private terrace to even your shower. Owned and run by Mark and Chloe Sheridan Smith, the camp is a love letter to the wild, where thoughtful little touches elevate this camp to somewhere seriously special. Watch the dawn break over the plains below from your four-poster bed, sipping on fresh coffee delivered to your room.
Set out in the cool pre-dawn light on one of the twice daily game drives, traversing the plains and forest that abounds with wildlife. Boasting one of the highest concentrations of elephant on the continent, watch these giants as they dig for water along the river edge. Capture the moment as you follow lions stalking through the mopane trees, or perhaps catch a leopard lazily draped over the branches of a tree for an iconic photo. Up your Instagram game with photography tips from the camp’s owner in between activities. Escape the midday sun in the camp’s infinity pool or simply sit on your suite’s deck taking in the moment. Truly immerse yourself in the bush on a guided walk, where even the littlest detail reveals magic – from discerning footprints to trailing one of Africa’s giants, experience safari like never before. As you near the end of your walk, you glimpse through the trees a private set up just for you, where a sumptuous breakfast is waiting beneath the shade of a might baobab. Relish the freedom of Ruaha with not another soul in sight.

Day 5-12

Pemba Island, Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania

After one last foray into the wilds of Ruaha, you fly off to the exotic islands of the Zanzibar Archipelago, dotted in the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean. Dive into your own Robinson Crusoe dream at Fundu Lagoon, one of only a few lodges on the entirety of Pemba Island. Only accessible by boat, leave civilisation behind as you land on this private peninsula. Scattered along the beach and verdant hillside, Fundu Lagoon epitomises laid back luxury. Simple traditional style meets with modern service for a halcyon escape that breaks the mould; with only 18 rooms, be assured of an intimate stay. Every room and suite claims a sea view, while the lush foliage provides cool shade and complete privacy, ideal for relaxing on your deck with a drink in hand. Feast on freshly caught seafood laced with local spices under the stars before sampling a night cap in one of the three bars. Cool off from the tropical sun in the infinity pool or dive into the inviting waters of the glimmering Pemba Channel where fishing boats sail past.
For those who can tear themselves away from the white sands, there are activities to entice even the most dedicated of beach lovers. Discover local culture on a tour of a nearby visit or glide through the dense mangrove forests teeming with life on a kayak. Plunge into another world on Misali Island, a marine protected area where turtles nestle amid the coral and jewel bright fish flit all around. Sink into serenity and feel your cares melt away under the soothing care of the spa therapist. For a seriously special moment, sail over the waves of the Pemba Channel on a traditional dhow, watching the sun set the sky and water on fire. Indulge in indulgence on the deserted beaches of Pemba Island.
