Mount Gahinga

An extinct volcano and part of the Virunga Mountain range, Mount Gahinga is covered in dense bamboo forest that is home to the endangered mountain gorilla, rare golden monkey and many species of bird. This is one of the few opportunities to track gorillas and see these magnificent creatures at home in the wild. Other activities include hiking the volcano and learning about ancient Batwa culture.

Mount Gahinga

A visit to Mount Gahinga is a chance to enjoy gorilla tracking through the magical environment offered by the bamboo forest covering the mountainside. The forest is alive with olive baboon, colobus monkey, grey parrot, eagles and sunbirds and is a wonderful place to hike, and the mountain’s low altitude makes it good for climbing to the summit to see the swamp caldera. A trip here is also a chance to learn more about the Batwa pygmies, some of the oldest inhabitants of the African rainforest. Learn about their culture, enjoy a traditional dance and pick up a unique souvenir.
