Okavango Delta and Moremi
The renowned Okavango Delta is an incredible natural phenomenon, the result of the Okavango River which flows inland from Angola. Entering Botswana in the northeast, the river fans out into a multitude of waterways and flood plains, creating a fertile habitat for a diverse wildlife population.
The Okavango Delta is the largest inland Delta in the world, it is easily made out in satellite imagery, and alongside the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, to the South, form the two most recognisable and most distinctive geographical features of Southern Africa.
The Moremi Game Reserve is a huge tract of land sandwiched between the Savuti channel and the Okavango Delta itself. The most widely known area of the Moremi is Chief's Island, the former hunting ground of Chief Moremi. This area is thought by many to offer the best game viewing in Africa. The area is fabulously varied with wide open flood plains, lily covered lagoons, groves of mature mahogany and mopani, and open forest.
