The Great Migration
Africa's supreme wildlife spectacle, the wildebeest migration is the story of three million animals’ relentless journey across the Maasai Mara and the Serengeti. This is nature at its visceral best.
As sensory overloads go, there’s little to match the migrations. The constant noise, the dust in the air, the smell of hundreds of thousands of animals on the move. You can quite literally feel the earth vibrating through the soles of your feet, see water trembling in your glass. Periods of calm erupt without warning into extreme tension as the wildebeest travel in search of life-giving water and fresh green grass.
The most famous spot to witness the migration is in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park when the animals swarm up north to the Maasai Mara. With the weather directing the herds in their never-ending search for grass, you can enjoy this spectacle year-round.
If wanting to spot the iconic river crossing, head to Kenya's Maasai Mara in mid-July - October. You'll have the best chance of seeing masses of frenzied animals plunging down riverbanks into crocodile-filled waters. It's an incredible sight.
Though we can customize any trip to East Africa around seeing the Great Migration, below are our top five ways to experience it.
