Refugio Amazonas is located approximately 3 1/2 hours by road and boat from Puerto Maldonado and is set on a 200-hectare private reserve, within the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Park.
The lodge is built from native materials – wood, bamboo, adobe and mud palm. The rooms are wood-built, in a very simple rustic style, with one open side (there are mosquito nets on the beds). All rooms have their own private bathroom with hot water and a veranda opening out on to the rainforest, from where you may see monkeys and birds. The Classic Rooms are lit by kerosene lamps, while the Superior Rooms have electric lighting until 10m. It is important to note that while the rooms are private they are not soundproof. Suites are equipped with a ceiling fan.
Facilities at the lodge include a large, open dining room and a wellness center offering massages and aromatherapy. There is also a 30-meter canopy tower which gives spectacular views of the rainforest and from where guests have a good chance of spotting toucans, parrots and macaws.
Excursions are included at the lodge and are lead by local community bilingual naturalist naturalists. The excursions are varied and can typically include boat trips on Lake Condenado, botanical trails to learn about rainforest medicines and visits to a nut plantation. Kayaking, mountain biking and canopy climbing are also offers.
This is an area of great biological diversity and species you may see during your stay including a variety of monkeys, parrots at the clay licks and capybara on the river banks.
