Alaska is best visited during the summer months (May to September), when the days are longest and the temperatures are at their peak. This season is ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking, rafting and flightseeing and also coincides with the salmon run and the best times to travel to the wilderness regions.

Itinerary

Day 1-5

Whale Pass, Alaska, United States of America

Upon your arrival at Ketchikan Airport, you will be met and accompanied to the adjacent floatplane dock for a scenic 40-minute floatplane flight to the remote Lodge at Whale Pass on the northern end of Prince of Wales Island. For the following four nights you will stay in one of the spacious and well-appointed Lodge Rooms, enjoying the chance to create your own Alaskan adventure from a wide range of activities.

Located close to the Tongass Forest and surrounded by mountains, glaciers, rivers, lakes and caves, the Lodge provides access to an abundance of wildlife, along with plenty of scope for outdoor fun. There is an extensive Adventure Menu from which to personalise your own itinerary and all activities are led by experienced naturalists, experts, and outdoor adventure specialists.

From whale and bear watching to forest hiking, mountain biking, glacier viewing, kayaking, and caving at El Capitan, Alaska’s largest known cave, there is adventure aplenty. Wildlife lovers will enjoy the chance to see bears, whales, sea otters, sea lions, blacktail deer, wolves, and eagles in their natural habitat. While the marine-rich waters of the Inside Passage ensure the salmon and halibut fishing is world-class. At the end of an action-packed day, recharge in the onsite spa with a massage, a sauna and a soak in the hot tub overlooking Whale Pass Bay.

Accommodation: The Lodge at Whale Pass ( 4 nights )
Day 5-6

Anchorage, Alaska, United States of America

After lunch on your final day at the Lodge, you’ll board a floatplane for the return journey to Ketchikan, to catch an Alaska Airlines flight to Anchorage. You’ll be met at the airport for the transfer to the Hotel Captain Cook, to spend the night in a Junior Suite. Tonight, you are free to explore the many and varied restaurants of the city to sample the local cuisine.

Alternatively, the hotel offers fine dining at the Crow’s Nest with French and New American dishes, along with an extensive wine list and panoramic views over the Cook Inlet and Chugach Mountains. Leisure facilities include an indoor pool, fitness centre, sauna and steam room and the hotel boasts a private art collection chronicling the adventures of Captain James Cook, who famously mapped the Alaskan coastline.

Accommodation: Hotel Captain Cook ( 1 night )
Day 6-9

Denali and Alaskan Wilderness, Alaska, United States of America

Today begins with an early morning pick-up for a floatplane flight to Winterlake Lodge. A luxury wilderness lodge, sitting on the quiet shores of Winter Lake, owners Carl and Kirsten Dixon have created a wonderful haven of relaxation and sustainable adventure. For the following three nights, you will stay in one of five cosy Cabins, providing the perfect opportunity to experience the endless wilderness and beauty of Alaska, as well as indulge in a range of sports and activities. The small nature of the lodge ensures an intimate and convivial ambience. Kirsten is an acclaimed and accomplished chef and the food served at Winterlake is exceptionally good, based on local, fresh, and organic produce.

Winterlake is on the site of a former hunting camp and since the couple have ceased all hunting activities, the wildlife has returned to the area, with large populations of bear, moose, wolverine, and wolves, among others. The lodge also sits on the Iditarod National Historic Trail, serving as the Finger Lake checkpoint for the famous Iditarod sled dog race. The trail makes for great hiking as does the adjacent Wolverine Mountain. The Wolverine Ridge Trail rewards hikers with wildlife spotting and glorious views of Mount Denali. Along with guided hiking, guests can engage with an array of activities including kayaking, canoeing, yoga, and cookery classes.

Your final full day at Winterlake includes a thrilling helicopter adventure, allowing you to appreciate and explore the pristine backcountry surrounding the lodge. Choose from several options including heli-fishing, heli-rafting on the wild waters of the Happy River, heli-hiking to a glacier ridge, glacier trekking or the unique experience of dining on Wolverine Ridge.

Accommodation: Winterlake Lodge ( 3 nights )
Day 9-10

Anchorage, Alaska, United States of America

On leaving the lodge, you will take a flightseeing floatplane through the Tordrillo Mountains and Triumvirate Glacier to Redoubt Bay Bear Sanctuary. Accompanied by a trained naturalist, you’ll enjoy a bear viewing boat trip for a close, but safe view of brown bears feeding, foraging, and meandering along the shoreline. Later that afternoon, you’ll board another floatplane for the flight back to Lake Hood, where you’ll be transferred back to Hotel Captain Cook for your final night.

After a fantastic experience enjoying the magnificent Alaskan scenery and adventure activities, the following day, your driver will take you to Anchorage International Airport for the flight home.
