Tubu Tree Camp

Tubu Tree Camp is a small intimate camp situated in the Jao concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve. There are just eight traditional style tents built on raised wooden platforms, all with incredible views over the surrounding floodplains and game.

  • Day and night game drives

  • Fishing in the winter months

  • Outside bar under of a large marula tree

Tubu Tree Camp is situated on Hunda Island in the 60,000 hectare Jao Concession - usually a water-inundated area during the floods, Hunda Island is the largest stretch of dry land in the area. This affords Tubu Tree Camp the most diverse game viewing within the concession, from the water-loving lechwe to blue wildebeest of the plains.

All the tents have en-suite bathroom facilities and private outdoor shower. The main dining and lounge areas are also large tents on raised platforms, to take advantage of the fantastic views over the floodplains, with an outdoor public area built under the canopy of a large marula tree.

Activities at Tubu Tree Camp include day and night game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, as well as walking with an armed guide. When the Okavango's annual flood is at its highest (normally May to late September) boating, fishing and mokoro trips are also offered.

Wildlife seen around Tubu Tree Camp includes elephant, lion, Burchell's zebra, red lechwe, southern giraffe, tsessebe, and blue wildebeest on the floodplains. Kudu, impala, leopard and bushbuck are also seen in the forested areas. The variety of bird life is impressive too, with dry-land species seen on the large islands and all the wetland birds seen on the floodplains and waterways.

Tubu Tree Camp is intimately involved in the Jao Lion Monitoring Project which was started shortly after the inception of the Jao Concession. Every effort is made to monitor the movement, social behaviour and condition of individual lions. Guests at Tubu Tree Camp will be surprised to learn some of the unusual developments and intriguing behaviour which has been documented amongst the lion prides here.
