Tongren

The small monastic town of Tongren is situated at the edge of the Tibetan plateau, inhabited by the historically nomadic Amdo people. Today, it draws culture seekers for its heritage of Thangka paintings produced by the artistic monk community who live around the area.

Tongren

Thangkas are scroll paintings on cotton or silk materials usually depicting a Buddhist deity or scene, used as a tool to depict the life and teachings of the Buddha, boddhisattvas, deities and influential lamas. The world's longest Thangkas can be found in Tongren.
