Split
Croatia’s second largest city, Split is a beautiful ancient town perched on the Adriatic coast. Built around a Roman palace, the city has been thriving since the fourth century, and life continues to this day within the old palace walls and beyond. The ideal gateway to the islands, Split is a gem that is not to be missed before continuing on to Hvar or Brac.
Bustling and lively, the heart of Split belongs within the walls of Diocletian’s palace. It was built as a retreat for the Roman emperor, and has expanded ever since. The winding cobbled alleys, delightful architecture and narrow streets are a joy to explore, and getting lost is half the fun! A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, the palace has endless restaurants, bars and cafes, frequented by locals and tourists alike. Equally enchanting is the Riva seafront, which is the perfect location to watch the sun set across the Adriatic with a drink in hand.
Surrounded by coastal mountains, Split’s setting is picture perfect, and it is easy to escape from the noise of the city with a visit to Marjan Park. On the west of the Split peninsula, with beautiful nature walks and stunning views across the sea and the city, a visit to Marjan is definitely worthwhile. At the top of its hill sit back, relax, and take in all this warm and welcoming city has to offer.
