Jebel Safari Tour in the Dhofar Mountains
Spend the day exploring the dramatic mountains that surround Salalah, strolling through wadis, taking in breathtaking vistas and visiting local villages.
Start your tour with a drive to the pretty fishing village of Taqah. Stop at the Taqah Plateau above the village for panoramic views over the surrounding coast. Continue on to Wadi Darbat, sometimes referred to as the 'evergreen wadi' due to the presence of lakes even outside the khareef (monsoon) months.
Take a stroll along the wadi bed, often busy with goats, cattle, and camels. If you are there during the khareef (usually June to September), you may see impressive waterfalls, which can be up to 100 metres high.
Your next stop will be at the Tawi Attair Sinkhole. This is one of the largest sinkholes in the world, at 100 metres wide and over 200 metres deep. It is also known as the 'Well of Birds', and so keep an eye out for one of the many species in the area and nests in the trees.
Continue to journey through the Jebel Samhan mountain range, stopping at a plateau almost 1,700 metres above sea level. This area is commonly referred to as the 'Grand Canyon' of the Dhofar region, offering extensive views towards the coast and neighbouring mountain ranges.
Enjoy a tasty picnic lunch while taking in the fantastic views before heading over to the adjacent Qara mountain range. Drive through the beautiful scenery, passing through local villages and stopping for photo opportunities before travelling back to Salalah in the late afternoon.
