Konrad Mludzinski

I caught the travel bug at a very young age when I was lucky enough to follow my parents on business trips to far-flung and exotic places around the globe. My decision to study geography at university confirmed my desire to learn more about the world as did the two six-month stints spent backpacking across Latin America either side.

With more than eight years of experience working in the travel industry and countless holidays to the region, I’ve managed to tick off almost every country in the Americas (including the more obscure such as Paraguay and Guyana!). Some of my personal highlights include walking with penguins in the Falkland Islands, hiking through pristine Amazonian rainforests and not seeing a single other tourist for days, visiting Machu Picchu (twice!) and partying on the streets of Rio during the weeklong carnival celebrations (which was actually my first exposure to the continent). It’s impossible to pinpoint a favourite country, let alone a specific memory, each visit opens my eyes to something new and exciting and spurs me on to make plans for the next visit!

My top tips

  • Don’t rush things! It’s easy to think you want to see and do everything, but, if you take your travels at a slower pace, you’ll actually experience more.

  • Don’t be overly ambitious with your plans. In South America, the distances are so vast and so getting between places can involve several flights and/or long road journeys. Don’t try and tick everything off in a single trip.

  • Pack light(er). Consider whether you really need all those items of clothing for those ‘just in case’ moments. A lighter bag makes it easier to get around and it also leaves you with more space for souvenirs and a bottle of local rum!
