With a focus on innovation and sustainability, HX’s MS Roald Amundsen is the world’s first battery powered hybrid cruise ship, reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 20%. Along with sister ship MS Fridtjof Nansen, the ship is one of the most environmentally friendly expeditions vessels on the planet. Named after the equally pioneering  Roald Amundsen, who was the first man to reach the South Pole and sail the Northwest Passage, the ship also has a PC6 ice-class ranking for polar expeditions.
With11 decks and a maximum of 530 guests (500 in the Antarctic to meet IAATO regulations), the ship offers a range of features and facilities for comfortable expedition cruising. These include an enrichment programme led by experts in their fields, a state-of-the-art Science Centre, fleet of inflatable boats, kayaks and a spacious Mud Room for storing outdoor gear and equipment. All guests on polar sailings receive a complimentary HX expedition jacket, backpack and water bottle.
For onboard wildlife and scenery viewing, there is an impressive two-level indoor/outdoor Observation Deck, alongside plenty of wellness facilities. These include an infinity pool with hot tubs and bar, fitness centre, spa, sauna and a running track. There is also a small medical centre. Starlink Wi-Fi is available free of charge, but please note this does not support streaming and when sailing in remote areas connectivity can be an issue.
The Scandi-inspired décor is a pleasing blend of elegance and cosiness with high-end granite, birch and blond wood finishes. There are 265 cabins falling into three main categories. All are outside facing and 50% have balconies. Entry level Polar Outside cabins include large picture windows, while some Arctic Superior cabins include balconies. The spacious Expedition Suites offer flexible sleeping arrangements and separate seating areas. All include ensuites with shower and bathing amenities, TV, safe and tea and coffee making facilities.
There are three onboard restaurants, although the fine dining Lindstrøm Restaurant is only free of charge to guests staying in the Expedition Suites. The Aune is the main restaurant serving buffet style meals with an open-seating policy. Alternatively, the Fredheim offers informal dining with light bites and snacks. As well as the Pool Bar, guests can also relax with a drink in the Explorers Lounge & Bar.
All cruises include meals, house wine, beer, soft drinks, and beverages, along with daily excursions including small boat trips, hikes and community visits led by the Expedition Team. Along with the complimentary HX expedition gear, guests also receive a digital photo album and video shot by the onboard photographer as a wonderful souvenir of the trip.
