Mediterranean expert, Lucy, goes in search of the underwater world of the Canary Islands on a whale watching tour to remember.

If you are looking to experience Tenerife beyond the beach, I highly recommend exploring the special setting of Scott Dunn favourite, the Ritz Carlton Abama. Set sail on the Atlantic Ocean on board a luxurious yacht for an unforgettable whale watching experience. The day trip was undoubtedly the highlight of my stay! We set off from Puerto Colon, where upon we were greeted by Marco and his friendly team, who were all very engaging and welcomed us with a delicious platter of fresh fruit.

The wonderful crew shared their-in depth knowledge of their beautiful home and were quick to spot the array of marine life on show. As we set off out to sea, cava in hand and the sun beating down on the deck of the boat, we knew we were in for a treat!

Barely 500 metres from the shore, our expectations were already exceeded, having been greeted by two curious bottle nose dolphins who were curiously poking around a sea bass farm in the hope of an easy meal.

A short while later, and a little further from the shore, we sat in awe as we were greeted by a family of pilot whales surrounding the sail boat. Marco was extremely knowledgeable and explained more about the whales as we sat in the blissful sun, watching the unusual and enchanting whales growing ever curious of the boat in their midst.

During all the excitement, we were served a delicious traditional Canarian lunch, consisting of artisan cheeses and cured meats – and of course, the crew never failed to keep our glasses full from start to finish.

As we returned to the port, we received a fitting farewell from yet another duo of bottle nose dolphins, who swam alongside us for many metres.

Marco and his crew really made us feel at ease throughout the trip. Their extensive knowledge of the surrounding area and ocean, their humour and the impeccable service on board really made this experience one to remember.
