Although the salt flats can be visited all year, they are regularly flooded from late November until April, meaning that itineraries must be altered to accommodate the difficult travelling conditions. The surface during wet season becomes like a giant mirror and is a particularly popular time to travel for photographers! Due to the altitude/elevation, the temperature drops at night and can feel very cold. The Bolivian cities of Sucre and La Paz can be visited year round.

Fly to La Paz
La Paz, Bolivia
Arrive in La Paz, Bolivia's buzzing capital. You're likely to feel the altitude today so we recommend taking it easy on your arrival day and not doing anything too strenuous whilst you acclimatise. Make up for lost time though on your first full day, which will see you head out to explore this fascinating city with a private guide. Explore the city's modern and colonial quarter, wander through the weird and wonderful Witches' Market, head to both the otherworldly Moon Valley and the Killi Killi viewpoint and of course enjoy a ride on the city's famed cable car system which affords excellent panoramic views of this sprawling metropolis.

Sucre, Bolivia
Leave La Paz today and head on a domestic flight to Sucre, where you'll feel like you've been transported to another world. Sucre is famed for its quaint colonial streets that have been so well-preserved and whilst here, you'll have the opportunity to explore the city with a private guide, visit the Museum of Indigenous Art and the House of Liberty, where Simon Bolivar signed the country's declaration of independence. Step back even further in time and head to view a collection of dinosaur footprints, found imprinted in a cement quarry that once was a lake floor, an absolute must for those with an interest in history.

Bid farewell to Sucre and fly back to La Paz for a night before your adventure continues.

Salar de Uyuni & the Altiplano, Bolivia
Your next destination is the breathtakingly beautiful Salar de Uyuni, where even the most novice of photographers can't fail to capture incredible shots. Arrive to this humbling place of endless horizons and stay for three nights in an iconic salt hotel. Staying three nights means you can really explore the area while maintaining the right balance of downtime while at altitude – head to remote parts of the salt flats, visit local communities or climb the volcanoes at its edges. Trek to 800-year-old Aymara fortresses, visit pre-Inca tombs that hold intact mummies inside, and visit the famous train cemetery near Uyuni. You have the opportunity to split your time between between two salt hotels, meaning you could visit sites further afield towards the Chilean border such as the beautiful Laguna Colorada.
