La Casona at Matetic Vineyards is a century-old estancia with its manicured gardens and towering palms. It is joined to one of South America’s most avant-garde wineries, and makes for a wonderfully pampering retreat among the rolling hills of the Rosario Valley. This is one of Chile’s most attractive wine regions, and it is a great place to learn about the principles of biodynamic winemaking, before tasting some of the estate's creations - the Syrah, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are world-class.
The property itself has seven spacious guest rooms, all furnished with four-poster beds, oak furniture, thick damask curtains, gilt-framed oil paintings and floral designs to create a cosy, home-from-home feel.
The restaurant, Equilibrio, has a great reputation, and head chef Matias Bustos produces meals worthy of the excellent wines: fresh giant scallops from the Pacific, estate-made ewe’s cheese and ginger-marinated duck are the kind of dishes you will find on the menu, all served in a sumptuously decorated dining room.
During the day you can relax on one of the day-beds by the pool, with views over the sweeping valley and vineyard; go for a morning walk through the acres of farmland and vineyards; take a tour of the stunning wine-making facilities set into the hillside with a dramatic oval barrel cellar and pair of tasting rooms; saddle up for an enchanting horse ride. Venturing further afield, explore the delights and amazing seafood restaurants of nearby Valparaiso, or explore poet Pablo Neruda's house in nearby Isla Negra.
