The north-eastern provinces of China are famed for their short, cool summers and long, freezing winters, due to their proximity with the cooler climes of Russia and North Korea. But it is the freezing winters when the cities of Harbin and Jilin are at their most spectacular. Harbin, China’s famed ‘city of ice’ transforms into a winter wonderland from December, when the dazzling Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival takes over the city. Temperatures of below -11°C ensure that the remarkable ice sculptures, carved from ice hewn from the Songhua River, remain pristine throughout the festival, that runs until the end of January. The city of Jilin is famous for its rime ice that clings to the willow trees on the banks of the Songhua River, in the sub-zero temperatures of January and February. This natural phenomenon occurs when the vapour rises from the river to meet the -20°C winter air, resulting in stunning crystalline formations on the trees.
