Average time to visit

Egypt enjoys a mild climate, making it a good year round destination. However, temperatures increase as you travel due south. Cairo can be chilly between December and February, and very hot between June and September. But the heat in Egypt is made bearable by the northerly breeze that leads to a drop in temperature at night. Peak temperatures in Upper Egypt occur between May and October, and are accompanied by extremely low humidity. The best time to visit Cairo is in the cooler months between November and March.

Cairo has long-standing populations of major religious groups and past colonial powers, so it’s possible to find celebrations for most every major holiday. Islam, however, is the prevailing force here, and the month of Ramadan is one of the most pronounced Islamic holidays. It happens in July or August, and during this time, some shops and restaurants may stay closed during the daytime fast.

Day 1-3

Cairo: Secrets of the past

Your family adventure begins in Cairo, the dynamic capital of Egypt where ago-old meets modern on the banks of the River Nile. Uncover the secrets of this ancient city as you explore the Pyramids of Giza, now the last standing of the Seven Wonders of the World. Delve into the fascinating history of ancient Egypt on a guided tour of the Egyptian Museum which is home to a staggering collection of 120,000 exhibits. Continue to the labyrinth-like Khan-el-Khalili bazaar to browse an endless array of local fabrics, spices, antiques and musical instruments.

Accommodation: Marriott Mena House ( 2 nights )
Fly to Luxor
Day 3-5

Luxor: Ancient Wonders Unveiled

Flying from Cairo to Luxor, dive straight into the highlights of this magnificent city set on the banks of the Nile, considered one of the world’s largest open-air museums. In the company of an expert guide, wander through the vast Karnak Temple complex built in dedication to the god Amon-Re. As night falls explore the magical Luxor Temple, admiring one of the most important religious centres in ancient Egypt glimmering with lights.
The next day, uncover the wonders of the Valley of the Kings with a fascinating day exploring this ancient burial site. Follow in the footsteps of archaeologist Howard Carter as you glimpse Tutankhamun’s tomb. Continue to the corresponding Valley of the Queens to marvel at the tomb of Nefertari, the first wife of Ramses II and explore the magnificent Temple of Hatshepsut, built into the base of a sheer cliff face. Stand in awe as you are shadowed by the monumental Colossi of Memnon statues built in honour of Amenhotep III, but later named after the Greek hero Memnon.

Accommodation: Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa ( 2 nights )
Day 5-10

Nile: Cruising Through Time

This morning you will be whisked by private transfer to the lively merchant town of Esna to board a Dahabiya boat – your home on the Nile for the next five nights. Meet your fellow passengers before heading to the Temple of Khnum to uncover the underground ruins where beautiful carvings and inscriptions have been excavated.
Over the next few days, cruise along the Nile in total luxury and stop to explore the archaeological treasures that rise dramatically from the banks of this legendary river. Feel connected to the rich history of ancient Egypt as you set foot on one of the oldest settlements of Upper Egypt at El Kab. Marvel at the incredibly well-preserved sandstone walls of the Temple of Horus in Edfu and wander through towering colonnades of the majestic Temple of Kom Ombo.
Savour time together as a family, exploring islands or taking a dip in the cooling waters of the Nile. You will also have the chance to discover the lesser visited but fascinating Gebel Silsileh. Located at the narrowest part of the river, this ancient settlement is inaccessible by larger boats. Explore the small temple of Horemheb and soak in picturesque views as you relax along the riverbank.

Accommodation: Nour El Nil Nile Cruises ( 5 nights )
Day 10-11

Aswan: An Oasis of Anicent Splendour

Wake to the impressive sight of Aswan on the horizon, where the rolling dunes of the Sahara meet the mighty Nile. Disembark from your luxury boat and continue to discover the delights of Aswan. Begin at the famed Aswan High Dam which was opened in 1970 to control the annual Nile flood and protect some of Egypt’s most important Pharaonic monuments. Continue to the Temple of Philae, an important sacred site to the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans dedicated to the goddess Isis. This superb temple complex was painstakingly transferred piece by piece from Philae Island to Agilkia Island in the 1960s while the dam was being constructed. You will also gain a fascinating insight into ancient Egyptian building methods during a visit to the Unfinished Obelisk, which remains in an incomplete state of construction in an ancient stone quarry. In the afternoon, sail around the islands of Aswan on a traditional felucca boat enjoying the cooling river breeze.
