Best time to visit

Straddling the equator, Indonesia tends to have a fairly consistent climate year-round. Rather than four seasons, Indonesia has two – dry (between May and September) and wet (between October and April) – and there are no extremes of temperature between winter and summer. The best time to visit Indonesia is generally the dry season, however many of the islands are beautiful all year round. Read on to find out more about Indonesia’s weather and the best time to travel there.

Indonesia’s climate is tropical with a dry (May to October) and wet season (November to April). Temperatures typically range from 27°C to 32°C most of the year and it is only the rainfall that brings about changes in weather month-on-month. During the dry season (typically the best time to visit Indonesia), expect clear skies, plenty of sunshine, and lower humidity levels. In the wet season, humidity can be high, and you might encounter tropical rains that are heavy but brief. The rains don’t tend to last all day, and during these months it’s possible to get lots of sunshine and bright blue skies. However, there can be occasional flooding, and typhoons might hit the islands between September and December, causing storms and heavy winds.

Bali and Java see some of the highest levels of rainfall in Indonesia in their wet months, however, it comes in short sharp bursts. Lombok, Komodo and Flores are the dryest islands overall.

Mountainous and volcanic areas can see a drop in temperature as the altitude rises, while coastal destinations will usually be hotter.

Seasonal Guide to Visiting Indonesia

While the weather, especially the temperature, in Indonesia, doesn’t change that much month on month, there are some variations. May signals the transition from wet to dry season, with decreasing rainfall, so can be one of the best times to visit Indonesia for good value and fewer crowds. September may see occasional showers as the wet season approaches, peaking between November and December, while in January, February, and March you might get sporadic downpours before the dry season returns in April.

Breakdown of Indonesia’s Peak, Wet and Dry Seasons

Indonesia experiences its peak season from June to August, led by dry weather, which lures visitors to its island paradises. This is widely thought to be the best time to visit Bali and Lombok, two of the most popular destinations in Indonesia. The wet season, from October to April, brings some rain, which doesn’t always last long but can be unpredictable. You might travel to Indonesia in the wet season and see no rain at all, or you could have a whole week of it. That said, it rarely rains all day. At the peak of the wet season, which is November to March, you might get heavy rainfall, which causes occasional travel disruptions due to flooding and rough seas, and attractions might close. However, this time of year also creates lush landscapes and sees fewer crowds. The dry season, from May to September, boasts clear skies and ideal conditions for outdoor activities, but with that also comes bigger crowds and higher costs.

An In-Depth Look at Indonesia's Main Islands

Bali

Bali, known as the "Island of the Gods,” entices visitors with its stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and lush landscapes all year round. The best time to visit Bali is during the dry season from May to September when the weather is hot and sunny, with temperatures around 30°C. June to August is peak season, but May and September/October are the low(er) season and the best time to go to Bali when there are fewer people around. Either way, the dry weather is ideal for outdoor activities like surfing in Uluwatu or exploring the cultural heart of Ubud. Bali offers a plethora of fun activities for all types of travellers, from those seeking enriching culture, relaxing yoga and spas to thrills such as white-water rafting. It suits honeymooners, families, and travellers of all ages.

Java

Java, the country's most populous island, is renowned for its rich history, ancient temples, and dramatic landscapes. The best time to visit is during the dry season from May to September when you can explore attractions like the majestic Borobudur Temple, the volcanic landscapes of Mount Bromo, and the vibrant city of Yogyakarta. Visitors can also hike to the top of Mount Merapi or relax on Java’s pristine beaches.

Lombok

Lombok, located east of Bali, offers a more laid-back atmosphere than its neighbour. The best time to visit is during the dry season from May to September, however, it isn’t as wet and humid as Bali in the rainy season, so can be visited all year round. Its dry weather allows you to enjoy activities like surfing at Selong Belanak Beach, trekking to Mount Rinjani, or snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters of the Gili Islands, which is best between September to November when the sea is clear and calm. Don't miss the chance to visit traditional Sasak villages and witness local craftsmanship in action too.
