Takayama
Steeped in 17th century traditional architecture and culture, the enchanting riverside town of Takayama is located amid the beautiful scenery of the Japanese Alps. Isolated from the rest of the country, the town has retained much of its historic charm evident in the narrow lanes and well-preserved wooden houses of the old town, Sanmachi Street.
Often referred to as Hida-Takayama, the town celebrates both spring and autumn with the highly-acclaimed Takayama Festival, held in April and October each year. Worth exploring is the Hida Folk Village, which has 30 homes built during the Edo Period (1603-1867), along with a traditional crafts centre. There are also two morning markets to browse and enjoy.
