Best Time to Visit Madagascar
Deciding when to visit Madagascar isn’t too complicated as the island has a distinct wet season and dry season. January to March sees heavy rainfall in many areas which can make some roads all but impassable. Some accommodation closes in the wet season and there is a high risk of cyclones in the east and northeast.
In general, the best time to visit Madagascar is from April to October/November. The coolest time to travel anywhere is during the dry season from May to October. Average maximum temperatures during dry season vary from about 30°c in coastal areas to around 25°c on the Hauts Plateaux, in the highlands 800 m/2,600 ft above sea level. In Antananarivo and other highland areas, temperatures during winter (May to October) can drop to 10°C and even lower during the night. In Eastern Madagascar whale watching off Ile Sainte Marie is best from mid-July to mid-September. The island of Miavana off the North Coast of Madagascar is an all year round destination. Unlike other parts of northern Madagascar which often experience heavy rainfall and cyclones from January to March, these months are a good time of year to be on Miavana for fishing and the waters are clear for snorkelling. You can expect a bit of a breeze and the rainfall is usually overnight.
