Fiordland National Park
This World Heritage Site on the edge of the great Southern Ocean has some of New Zealand’s most beautiful and dramatic scenery. Fiordland is home to snow-capped mountains, native forest, glacier-carved valleys, crashing waterfalls and crystal-clear lakes. Whether you cruise the fiords, hike the trails, fish the waters or take a scenic flight, do add Fiordland to your New Zealand itinerary.
This is a wonderful area for wildlife viewing, so look out for fur seal, Fiordland crested penguin, native forest parrot and the flightless Takahe. The area also contains three of New Zealand’s nine Great Walks including the Milford and Kelper Tracks, so hikers will be in their element. Cruising the fiords is a fantastic way to experience the sheer beauty of this region or for a more personal experience try kayaking. The south island’s largest lake Lake Te Anau is also found here. Visit the Glowworm Caves on its shores to see sculpted limestone, glittering glow worms and subterranean waterfalls.
